The Innovations Academy Middle School Difference

Middle school has a reputation. Awkward. Overwhelming. The years kids just have to survive. At Innovations Academy, we respectfully disagree — and our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders prove it every single day.

Here, at our tuition-free K-8 public school in San Diego, middle school isn’t something to get through. It’s something worth anticipating.

Learning That Goes Places — Literally

Our 6th-8th graders tackle a rigorous academic curriculum that meets and exceeds California Learning Standards through inquiry-based project learning

Think student-produced shows entered in the New York Times Podcast Contest.

Think WWII-era food trucks where students design menus using rationed ingredients, then cook and serve them on Exhibition Night.

Think astronomy studied under open desert skies on an overnight field trip.

And throughout middle school, field trips take learning well beyond our campus — from a thermal engineering experience aboard the USS Midway to a Civil War reenactment, the Holocaust museum in Los Angeles, and to Finance Park where students try their hand at real finance jobs. Sixth graders experience a three-day camp and visit businesses in our area, while eighth graders visit high schools to prepare for their next chapter and cap their final year with a nine-day national parks field trip.

More Than Academics

Strong STEM, Spanish, and arts classes form the core at Innovations Academy, but the real magic lives in the details. Ceramics. Engineering. Friday Seminars in cooking, short film studies, wood carving, and strategy board games. Two weekly team-building sessions. Natasha, our beloved performing arts teacher, watches students blossom from shy beginners into confident performers year after year. And then there’s the advisory discussions built around real social-emotional topics middle schoolers actually care about (hint, there’s more to a social life than 6-7 it turns out!)

There’s also a café where students independently fuel up, spread out, study, and practice the autonomy that prepares them for high school and beyond.

A Community That Knows Our Families

At Innovations Academy, no middle schooler disappears into the crowd.

Teachers like Devon (8th grade Language Arts, 10 years at IA and counting) build classrooms around voice, choice, and genuine community. Class councils solve real problems together. Students plan their own Halloween carnival. The relationships formed here follow students for life.

Ready for What’s Next

The goal of middle school at Innovations Academy has always been bigger than middle school. Our graduates don’t just survive the transition to high school, they arrive ready to lead.

Our students spend years asking the right questions instead of memorizing the right answers, so they’re already comfortable with the deep, sustained work of honors and AP classes.

Students balance freedom with real responsibility — managing their time, directing their learning, presenting their work to community audiences — so the increased independence of high school doesn’t rattle them. It suits them.

Creative confidence, built through years of arts integration and project-based experiences, often becomes a high school focus. Social-emotional skills, practiced daily since kindergarten, prepare students to navigate new relationships, group dynamics, and challenges with maturity.

The results speak for themselves: our 8th graders average a 3.5 GPA and go on to thrive in a wide variety of San Diego high schools. Not because we taught them what to think — but because we taught them how.

Middle school done right looks like this. Come see it for yourself — we’re enrolling now for 2026-27 at innovationsacademy.org or call 858-271-1414.
